Martin Paterson gears up for Notts County's League Two play-off final at Wembley by chopping trees and enjoying country music. The 39-year-old coach celebrated a 1-0 aggregate victory over Chesterfield in the semi-finals, culminating in a tense goalless draw in the second leg on Friday night. This victory sets up a crucial match against Salford City on Monday, 25 May.

In his first full season at Meadow Lane, Paterson reflects on his journey as a manager, having previously led Burton Albion for a brief period in 2024. He has learned to manage the pressures of the role more effectively.

"I love getting out in the garden, and I just chop stuff down to be honest with you," Paterson shared with BBC Sport.

He aims to balance his responsibilities by spending quality time with his family while listening to his favorite artist, George Strait.

Paterson also leans on a network of former managers, including Sean Dyche and Eddie Howe, for guidance. He recalled a significant text from former Stoke City manager Tony Pulis before the semi-final, emphasizing the importance of maintaining clean sheets.

"I've got lots of mentors that I speak to because I don't know everything and I'm not always going to be right," he explained.

Paterson's primary goal this season is to return the historic club, the world's oldest professional football club, to League One after an 11-year absence.

"We know this [the semi-final win] was just a step on the way and we've got another big game coming up," he stated, expressing pride in his team's progress.
