Maro Itoje shared his reflections on watching England play from a distance this summer, describing the experience as “very weird.” After being rested during the three Nations Championship games in July, he believes that more top players should consider taking breaks to extend their careers. The British & Irish Lions captain emphasized the benefits of “taking a breath” following a demanding year both on and off the pitch.

Last year, Itoje faced the dual challenges of leadership for club and country, alongside the personal loss of his mother. With the 2027 World Cup approaching, national coach Steve Borthwick suggested a mini-sabbatical for Itoje, allowing him to return fit and mentally refreshed for the upcoming season, having enjoyed his first full pre-season with Saracens since 2014.

“I don’t regret it at all,” Itoje stated at the Prem media launch at Twickenham. He noted the oddity of being away from the team during games but affirmed that it was the right decision for his mental health. He chose to keep his distance from the squad, even avoiding watching live games to sidestep emotional involvement.

Itoje, who turns 32 next month, advocates for breaks among top players, noting that countries like South Africa and New Zealand have allowed their stars to sign contracts in Japan. He acknowledged that although the idea of a break had never crossed his mind, he ultimately recognized its value.

As the Prem season kicks off, Itoje looks forward to making an impact in the upcoming matches, starting with a test against Australia on 8 November. He expressed optimism that his time off would enable him to return stronger, having previously been involved in every campaign since joining England.

In addition to his rugby commitments, Itoje is preparing for new responsibilities as his wife, Mimi, is expecting their first child. He remains encouraged by the recent performances of the England team under the leadership of his Saracens teammate Jamie George.
