Manchester United are reportedly eyeing Eddie Howe as a potential replacement for Michael Carrick, with the former Newcastle United manager emerging as a leading candidate should the club opt for a managerial change.

According to an exclusive report from TEAMtalk, the INEOS hierarchy still holds Howe in high regard. His Premier League experience and prior achievements make him an appealing option for the Old Trafford job.

Eddie Howe, aged 48, has been without a managerial role since departing from Newcastle in the summer, after nearly five years in charge. During his tenure, he transformed Newcastle into a competitive Premier League side, guiding them to the Champions League multiple times and securing the Carabao Cup in 2025. These accomplishments have solidified his reputation as one of England’s most capable managers.

Despite appointing Carrick as the permanent manager earlier this year, Manchester United had previously considered Howe for the position. The Red Devils have had a disappointing start to the current campaign, with inconsistent performances and poor results raising doubts about Carrick’s long-term future.

While the club is not planning an immediate dismissal, they remain hopeful that Carrick can improve results and achieve consistency before any decision is made regarding his position.

Sources close to the situation indicate that Howe is ready for a return to management, provided the right opportunity arises. His experience in both domestic and European competitions could appeal to INEOS, who aim to avoid further instability at Old Trafford. For now, Carrick has the club's backing, but Howe’s name will likely remain in consideration if results do not improve in the coming weeks.
