A man has been sentenced for sending racially abusive messages to Jess Carter, an England footballer, during the Women's Euro 2025 tournament. Nigel Dewale, 60, from Great Harwood in Lancashire, received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, at Blackburn Magistrates' Court.

The abusive posts were directed at Carter's TikTok account and included derogatory references to her race, with claims that people with brown skin were "murderers" and "groomers".

In addition to the suspended sentence, Dewale was ordered to complete 10 days of community service and pay a fine of £239. He had previously pleaded guilty to sending a malicious message via a public communications network between June 19 and June 23, 2025.

Furthermore, Dewale admitted to possessing an offensive weapon, specifically an extendable baton, in a private place in February.
