Manchester United has secured veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer from Leeds United. The 35-year-old Wales international opted against a new deal at Elland Road, instead committing to a two-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option for an additional year. Darlow will serve as the back-up to Senne Lammens.

Darlow expressed his enthusiasm about joining the club, stating, "I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United. I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands. This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my teammates and helping to drive the group forwards."

His signing comes as Altay Bayindir, currently Lammens’ back-up, is expected to depart United, with rumors linking him back to Turkey. Additionally, Andre Onana was sent out on loan to Trabzonspor earlier this month, while veteran Tom Heaton, aged 40, signed a new one-year deal this summer.

Darlow joined Leeds for the 2023-24 season, making 38 appearances, including 22 in the Premier League. A statement from Leeds read:

With 15 international caps and prior Premier League experience from his time at Newcastle, Darlow arrives at Old Trafford just a day after United confirmed the £48 signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea. The Red Devils are also nearing a deal for Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after activating his release clause.

Michael Carrick aims to strengthen his midfield following Casemiro's departure at the end of last season. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte is set for an extended recovery from a knee injury sustained during the World Cup.

United’s Premier League campaign kicks off against newly-promoted Hull City on 22 August.
