Eddie Howe is reportedly ready to take the helm at Manchester United if the club opts to part ways with Michael Carrick amid a challenging tenure.

Following an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, Carrick faces mounting pressure, with the team now winless in seven matches. As a result, the focus is shifting towards potential replacements, with Howe emerging as a frontrunner.

According to journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon, as shared by TEAMtalk, Howe is viewed as the “favourite” for the managerial position and “would take it” if offered. The 48-year-old has been out of management since his departure from Newcastle United in July, after nearly five years at St James' Park.

Howe's tenure at Newcastle ended following a disappointing 12th-place finish in 2025/26, but his overall record is commendable:

• Led the club to the Champions League twice
• Secured their first major domestic trophy in 70 years by winning the 2025 League Cup

Other candidates being considered by United include Fabian Hürzeler and Antonio Conte, both of whom are prominent in the discussions.

While Howe may not embody the glamorous appointment some fans anticipate, this could work to his advantage. Manchester United has often pursued high-profile managers or trendy tactical projects without achieving lasting stability. Howe presents a different option, offering:

• Proven Premier League experience
• A clear pressing style
• Evidence of improving players over time

His success at Newcastle demonstrated his ability to uplift a struggling side and compete for significant honors. However, doubts linger due to Newcastle's lackluster last season and the unique scrutiny that comes with managing United.

If Carrick fails to turn around United’s concerning decline swiftly, Howe could evolve from merely a name on the shortlist to a serious contender for the job.
