Phil Foden delivered a stunning man-of-the-match performance as Manchester City triumphed 5-1 over AEK Athens in the Champions League, showcasing his remarkable talent after a challenging couple of seasons. Having struggled to meet expectations and missing the England squad for the World Cup, Foden expressed excitement for a fresh start under manager Enzo Maresca this season.

Prior to this match, Foden's return to form had been slow, highlighted by a red card in the derby against Manchester United. However, he reignited his season with a goal against Ipswich, marking his first Premier League goal in 10 months. This momentum carried over into the clash with AEK Athens, where he netted a superb hat-trick.

Foden commented on his performance, stating, "I enjoyed that a lot. The lads were great again. We showed determination again. I am a forward so I have to keep scoring and helping the team. It is good for my confidence."

In the match, Foden was instrumental, being involved in four of the five goals. Manager Maresca took a bold approach by making eight changes from the previous match, retaining only Gianluigi Donnarumma, Ruben Dias, and Foden. With Erling Haaland resting due to an injury, Foden excelled in a false nine role, which he relished.

Despite a moment of concern when AEK reduced the deficit to 2-1, City quickly regained control. Foden's hat-trick made him the third Englishman to score a hat-trick and provide an assist in a Champions League match, joining the ranks of Wayne Rooney and Raheem Sterling. His second goal was particularly remarkable, a first-time strike into the top corner that drew praise from former City defender Joleon Lescott, who described Foden's finishing as "exquisite."

Foden's display may have solidified his position as a key player should Haaland be unavailable, proving he can step up as a central figure in the attack.
