Trent Alexander-Arnold expressed his hope for a "degree of understanding" from Liverpool fans as he continues to face abuse 14 months after leaving Anfield for Real Madrid. Despite a challenging first season in Spain and missing out on the England World Cup squad, the 27-year-old admitted that the reaction to his departure still "hurts" him deeply.

In an interview with the Mirror, he stated, "The booing and disappointment from Liverpool supporters is something I'm absolutely able to shoulder. I can understand it, in my own way." He emphasized that Liverpool will always hold a significant place in his heart, saying, "I watch every Liverpool game."

Alexander-Arnold acknowledged the emotional toll of his exit, mentioning the sacrifices he made during his 20 years with the club. He recalled being booed during his return to Anfield for a Champions League match in November, where Real Madrid suffered a 1-0 defeat. However, he noted that these negative experiences do not reflect his interactions with fans in person when visiting Merseyside.

He stated, "Not a single interaction I've had in person reflects the sort of stuff you get online or via social media." The defender, who played in 35 of Real Madrid's 62 matches last season, described online abuse as a "sad part of life" in 2026, with some messages crossing the line.

Alexander-Arnold rationalizes the negativity by recognizing it does not represent the football club he loves or his home city. He concluded, "This isn't me saying everyone in Liverpool is fine with me leaving the club - of course they aren't. But that's very different from the stuff that goes beyond the football."
