Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has urged administrators to secure a deal for this autumn’s Rugby League World Cup to be broadcast on free-to-air television. The announcement that the tournament will be shown exclusively on subscription TV has sparked concerns among fans and parliament members alike.

Traditionally, the BBC has aired the Rugby League World Cup, maintaining a strong relationship with the sport regardless of its location. However, this autumn, the BBC confirmed it would not bid for the broadcasting rights, leading to Premier Sports acquiring exclusive streaming rights in the UK and Ireland. This decision means rugby league supporters will need to pay to watch the tournament, which has faced significant backlash.

Nandy, a passionate rugby league supporter and MP for Wigan, has appealed to the International Rugby League (IRL) to negotiate a deal that ensures at least some matches, likely those involving England, are available on free-to-air TV. She expressed her disappointment, stating, "Rugby league is a source of pride and identity that brings communities together across the country," and emphasized the need for fans to follow the tournament.

The 2022 World Cup, held in England, set TV audience records with simultaneous men’s, women’s, and wheelchair tournaments, all broadcast live by the BBC. England’s men's team garnered audiences exceeding one million, contributing to a cumulative viewership of over 30 million. This year's numbers may decline significantly if no agreement is reached for free-to-air coverage.

Premier Sports has previously shown World Cup fixtures, including the 2017 tournament, and now holds exclusive rights. Danny Kazandjian, the IRL’s secretary, expressed excitement about continuing their partnership with Premier Sports to enhance the sport's global investment.
