Wigan Warriors captain Liam Farrell is set to retire from rugby league at the end of the current season. At 36 years old, Farrell has played 428 games for Wigan, scoring 151 tries since his debut in 2010, marking a remarkable career.

As a second-row forward, he has secured numerous accolades, including:

• Six Super League titles
• Five League Leaders' Shields
• Five Challenge Cups
• Two World Club Challenges

Farrell took on the captaincy before the 2023 season and led Wigan to an unprecedented quadruple in 2024. Capped 12 times by England, he was under contract until the end of next season but has been sidelined since late June due to a shoulder injury.

Reflecting on his career, Farrell expressed gratitude, stating, "It's been a whirlwind of a career, more than I could ever have dreamed of doing. Although I'll be sad not to be playing any more, I'm also very grateful for the career I have had."

A proud Wigan local, he came from a strong rugby league family, being a cousin of former Wigan captain Andy Farrell, now head coach of Ireland's rugby union team. After debuting as a teenager, he quickly became a key player, contributing to Wigan's Grand Final success over St Helens later that year.

Farrell has been a consistent figure for the Warriors, earning a spot in the Super League Dream Team six times and winning the Harry Sunderland Trophy in the 2016 Grand Final against Warrington Wolves. He succeeded Thomas Leuluai as Wigan's skipper, demonstrating leadership during a new era under head coach Matt Peet.

Under his captaincy, Wigan has won seven of the eleven trophies available, with the latest being the Challenge Cup at Wembley in May. As Wigan aims for the League Leaders' Shield and the Grand Final next month, Farrell remains focused on his final games, stating, "Playing one game for Wigan was always the goal for me... to have been able to play over 400 games in this jersey has been nothing short of incredible."
