Lewis Ludlow, the flanker for Gloucester, expressed his feelings about losing the club captaincy last August, describing the experience as "brutal". He stated he would "take it back tomorrow" if given the chance. Having played over 250 games for the Cherry and Whites, Ludlow's tenure as skipper from 2020 to 2025 marks him as the longest-serving captain in the club's history.

Replaced by Tomos Williams for the 2025-26 season, Ludlow was taken by surprise during the pre-season when officially informed of the change. He noted, "It was brutal... I didn't think it would be that timing but it was." Despite the transition, Ludlow aimed to support Williams, saying, "I felt like the only thing I could do then was worry about my rugby and be the best bloke I could be to help Tommy."

His teammates still refer to him as 'Skip', and referees continue to seek him out post-match, highlighting his lasting influence. Ludlow remarked on the balance he and Williams managed, allowing him to maintain a leadership role within the team.

In addition to his club duties, Ludlow captained England in two matches during 2021, becoming the fifth player to do so on debut. However, after receiving a red card against Canada and facing a four-game ban, he has not played for the national team since. Despite this setback, he cherishes the experience and the praise he received from then-head coach Eddie Jones, who recognized his leadership qualities.

Reflecting on his journey, Ludlow stated he has no regrets about his international career, emphasizing his fitness and strength during that period and the pride he holds in captaining his country.
