Lewis Hamilton and world championship leader Kimi Antonelli received grid penalties that reshuffled the front of the starting lineup for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, faced a three-place demotion from his original second-place qualifying position after an incident involving McLaren's Oscar Piastri.

Hamilton's penalty stemmed from impeding Piastri at the end of Q3, which allowed Antonelli, who initially qualified fourth, to move ahead. However, Antonelli also received a three-place penalty for failing to adequately slow down for yellow flags following a spin by Max Verstappen. As a result, Hamilton will start from fifth position, while Antonelli will take the seventh spot, behind his Mercedes teammate George Russell.

Lando Norris from McLaren secured pole position after qualifying, with Charles Leclerc moving up to second due to Hamilton's penalty. Oscar Piastri will start third, and Verstappen has claimed the fourth position after originally qualifying sixth.

In an explanation regarding Hamilton's penalty, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur noted that the team bore responsibility for the miscommunication that led to the incident. Vasseur stated, "We told him [about Piastri] but it was far too late. If there's a mistake, it's our mistake."

Hamilton expressed surprise at the situation, claiming he was unaware of Piastri's proximity during his final lap. The stewards concluded that Hamilton's actions had indeed impeded Piastri, justifying the penalty after reviewing evidence from the incident.

The Hungarian GP is set for July 26, with pre-race coverage starting at 12:30 PM and the race itself at 2 PM.
