LeBron James officially ends his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, as confirmed by his agent, Rich Paul, on Tuesday. Set to become a free agent at 6 p.m. ET, James has indicated he plans to sign with another team after eight seasons in L.A. Notably, he led the Lakers to the 2020 NBA title and became the franchise's all-time leading scorer in 2023.

Paul also announced that James will return for the 2026-27 season, marking his record 24th season in the NBA. The Golden State Warriors, who have shown interest in James, appear to be frontrunners for his services, aiming to reunite him with former teammates Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Additionally, the Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly looking to bring James back for a third stint.

Lakers president Jeanie Buss expressed gratitude for James’s contributions, stating, "LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers."

Despite the Lakers acquiring Luka Dončić at the 2025 trade deadline, which shifted James to a lesser offensive role, he adapted well, leading the team to a 15-2 record in March. However, injuries to key players derailed their championship hopes, resulting in a second-round playoff exit against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

As he enters free agency, James finds himself in a unique position. While he is coming off a near-max contract, his current value is debated, yet he remains capable of making significant contributions in the playoffs. The market for his services is tight, with limited cap space available.
