An Arizona State hockey player and St. Louis Blues draft pick, Matthew Mayich, remains hospitalized nearly two weeks after collapsing during an offseason workout. His attorney, Rob Carey, is actively searching for answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mayich, who is just 21 years old, collapsed on August 20 during an outdoor practice on the first day of the fall 2026 semester. Carey expressed concern about the workout conditions, describing them as "onerous" and "grueling." He noted that the practice lasted over an hour with only one water break, which he deemed inappropriate for athletes who had not acclimated to the hot desert environment.

Carey stated:

There were signs of trouble well before Mayich collapsed. ASU’s only statement so far was to note that coaches and trainers were present.

The Arizona State University athletic department has announced plans for a comprehensive review, with athletic director Graham Rossini clarifying, "This is not an investigation where someone is suggesting something went wrong."

Carey is advocating for an independent investigation, calling for:

• Administrative leave for those involved.
• Verification of who authorized the workout.
• Detailed insights into the planned activities.

The family’s primary focus remains on supporting Mayich, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft but had not signed an entry-level contract. After playing four seasons with the Ottawa 67’s and a stint at Clarkson University, he transferred to Arizona State for the upcoming season.
