Australia’s freestyle star Lani Pallister showcased her talent by winning both gold and silver medals during the opening night of the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California.

Pallister claimed gold in the women’s 200m freestyle, narrowly defeating Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh. She clocked a time of 1:53.67, just 0.02 seconds shy of her personal best, while McIntosh finished second at 1:53.86.

About two hours later, Pallister returned to compete in the demanding 1,500m freestyle, where she set a personal best despite finishing behind legendary American swimmer Katie Ledecky. Ledecky, maintaining her dominance in the event for the past 16 years, won with a time of 15:36.09. Pallister’s time of 15:38.62 surpassed her previous best of 15:39.14 from June last year.

The Australian Dolphins also celebrated other victories on the first night:

• Sam Short won the men’s 800m freestyle with a time of 7:37.02, just 0.71 seconds off his personal best, edging out American Bobby Finke.
• Ben Armbruster captured gold in the men’s 50m butterfly in 22.75 seconds, falling short of the Australian record by 0.02 seconds.
• Brittany Castelluzzo secured victory in the women’s 200m butterfly, clocking 2:06.24, ahead of her teammate Liz Dekkers at 2:06.56.

The Dolphins won a total of four gold medals out of the 11 available on the opening night, marking a strong start to the championships.
