Lani Pallister has begun Australia’s medal tally at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a stunning victory in the 400m freestyle. Clocking in at 3:59.56, Pallister outperformed the fastest qualifier, Erika Fairweather from New Zealand, and secured the gold medal.

Jenna Forrester, another Australian swimmer, added to the country's success by winning the bronze medal in the same event. Though Pallister was the only competitor to finish under four minutes, she fell short of the Games record of 3:58.06, previously set by Ariarne Titmus in Birmingham.

Competing early on Saturday morning (AEST), the 24-year-old swimmer dominated her final after qualifying as the second-fastest in the morning heats. Known as one of the standout athletes in Australia’s Glasgow team, Pallister is expected to excel in future events, being a favourite in the 800m and 1500m freestyle, as well as the 200m freestyle and the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Pallister has faced numerous health challenges, yet she has emerged as a rising star in Australian swimming. After the impact of Covid-19 disrupted her chances at the Paris Olympics, where she was qualified for three distance freestyle events but only competed in the 800m, Glasgow represents her opportunity for a significant breakthrough.
