The San Francisco 49ers have officially kicked off their training camp but will do so with a significant change at the helm. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is starting the 2026 campaign in a limited capacity following a car accident that left him with non-life-threatening injuries.

In a statement released on Saturday, the team confirmed that Shanahan, age 46, will still engage in team activities but will not take on his usual full responsibilities. Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster and the team coordinators will assume the bulk of coaching duties during Shanahan's recovery.

The accident, which occurred on July 14, involved a collision between Shanahan's vehicle and an SUV near his Northern California home. Reports indicate that while his injuries were serious, they were not life-threatening. Specific injuries included:

• A broken nose
• Three broken ribs
• A broken hand
• A severe concussion
• Over 40 stitches to his face

Shanahan was transported by paramedics to a local hospital and was released later that day. Fortunately, the other driver involved was unharmed. According to Palo Alto Lt. Nicholas Martinez, there were no indications of drugs or alcohol being involved, and both drivers cooperated with law enforcement.

As Shanahan recovers at home, he informed the coaching staff about the incident on Tuesday. He remains under medical supervision and has yet to receive clearance for full coaching duties, which will depend on the resolution of his concussion symptoms.
