Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kubiak officially named Kirk Cousins the starting quarterback on Wednesday, confirming expectations despite the team selecting Fernando Mendoza first overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. Cousins, who signed a one-year, $20 million deal during free agency, had been anticipated to serve as a placeholder for Mendoza.

Kubiak waited until just over a week before the September 13 season opener against the Miami Dolphins to finalize his decision. Throughout the preseason, Cousins demonstrated his capability, completing 13 of 17 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown across two games. Kubiak praised him, stating, "He played really good football... he's earned it."

In contrast, Mendoza faced inconsistencies in his preseason performance, throwing interceptions in multiple games and completing just over half of his passes. Kubiak noted Mendoza needs more time to adjust to the NFL's pace, emphasizing that he requires more practice and development.

Cousins, 38, previously started eight games for the Atlanta Falcons, yielding a 5-3 record while throwing for 1,721 yards and 10 touchdowns. His familiarity with Kubiak's system, which utilizes under-center and play-action plays, contributed to his selection as starter.

Looking ahead, Mendoza could see action later in the season, especially if the Raiders struggle. Kubiak expressed commitment to developing Mendoza, while also focusing on maximizing Cousins' performance in the immediate future. The Raiders' offense, featuring standout players like Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty, aims to improve significantly this season after last year's disappointing rushing statistics.
