World championship leader Kimi Antonelli is set to incur a grid penalty at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix in Monza, with confirmation from Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. Due to two separate technical issues, Mercedes has concluded that Antonelli must exceed the season's limit on power unit parts before the campaign concludes.

In strategic moves typical of Formula 1, teams often choose to implement grid penalties at tracks where overtaking is more feasible. This is why Mercedes plans to install a new power unit for Antonelli during his home race in Monza, scheduled from September 4-6.

Currently, Antonelli enjoys a 53-point lead over Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari after extending his advantage by finishing fourth in the Dutch Grand Prix Sprint.

Wolff stated, "We need big points. Kimi is going to probably lose some in Monza starting in the back, so hopefully we can pocket some here."

George Russell, also facing a similar situation regarding his power unit parts, managed to reduce his championship deficit to Antonelli to 56 points by winning the Saturday Sprint. However, neither Mercedes nor Russell has disclosed where he might take his penalty.

The extent of Antonelli's penalty in Monza will depend on the number of parts Mercedes installs, as he is on the brink of breaching limits for several components. The penalty will start at a minimum of 10 places, but multiple installations could see him starting from the back of the grid.

Before the Sprint, Antonelli's father, Marco, hinted at the penalty, stating, "Monza we will see. It will be difficult, for sure - for a lot of reasons."
