The Olympic champion's performance not only marked her fastest heat time but also set the stage for an exciting semi-final showdown against rising star Audrey Werro and seasoned competitor Femke Broeders-Bol.

Hodgkinson, 24, humorously explained her choice to wear sunglasses during the race, saying, "It’s sunny out there. I’m just trying not to get wrinkles and stop the need for Botox too early." Reflecting on her race, she stated, "I felt really good. I think that’s the fastest I’ve ever run in a heat... running at that kind of pace is a bit more in keeping with my training, so it actually felt kind of nice."

Having recently achieved a personal best in training in Portugal, Hodgkinson expressed her excitement to compete, emphasizing the importance of medals in creating legacy. "This will hopefully be my fifth back-to-back title," she noted.

In the same heat, Audrey Werro impressed with a time of 1:57.83, while Femke Broeders-Bol followed closely with 1:59.96. Werro, who previously defeated Hodgkinson in Stockholm, remains unfazed by the pressure of competing on British soil. "It’s great to be here at the European championships and I am expecting great things," she said, adding that she plans to transform the pressure into confidence.
