Keely Hodgkinson and her top rivals advanced effortlessly through their heats on Tuesday, setting the stage for an eagerly awaited clash in Friday's final at the European Championships.

Hodgkinson, the Olympic gold medallist and two-time defending champion, dominated her heat, finishing in 1:57.28, the fastest time among all competitors. She expressed confidence after her performance, stating, "Championships are a fresh start. That felt very good, very comfortable."

Audrey Werro of Switzerland, a frontrunner after posting the fastest time in four decades earlier this season, won her heat in 1:57.83. Femke Broeders-Bol, transitioning from the 400m hurdles, clocked 1:59.96 to secure her place in the final. Jemma Reekie of Britain also advanced, finishing fourth in her heat.

Despite a challenging outdoor season marked by injuries, Hodgkinson remained focused, noting, "It's a really exciting time for the women's 800m." She recalled her previous race at the Alexander Stadium, where she had to withdraw from the 400m final due to hamstring issues.

In contrast, Werro's season has been smooth, with her best time of 1:53.80 ranking as the third-fastest in history. When asked about competing against Hodgkinson, she remarked, "I think it’s not changed a lot of things... I am expecting great things."

The semi-finals are scheduled for Thursday, and despite concerns about attendance numbers, organizers reported that ticket sales have exceeded expectations, with several sessions nearing sell-out.
