Ukrainian Kate Koval has announced her departure from the Louisiana State University basketball program, citing the signing of Russian player Anna Minaeva as a pivotal reason for her exit. Koval, who played one season with the team, expressed her decision was driven by personal reasons linked to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

In her heartfelt Instagram post, Koval shared the impact of the war on her family:

• Her father serves in the Ukrainian military, fighting against Russian aggression.
• She has lost loved ones and witnessed destruction in her homeland due to Russian attacks.

Koval stated, "The timing of this situation and the deep personal effect it has had on me... ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me."

Despite her commitment to the team, she emphasized the importance of staying true to her values and her country. Koval was anticipated to be LSU's starting center this season, and while the transfer portal has closed, she hopes the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will consider her unique circumstances and allow her to transfer to another university.

Reflecting on her time at LSU, Koval expressed gratitude towards her teammates, coaches, and the entire LSU community, stating, "I will always cherish the relationships, experiences, and memories I made there."
