Kansas City has warmly embraced Argentina supporters as they prepare for their World Cup Group J debut against Algeria. However, an intriguing rivalry has emerged: which region truly excels in barbecue?

For South American fans, especially Argentines, enjoying cold beer and grilled meat, known as asado, is as crucial to their culture as soccer. Meanwhile, local fans are eager to showcase their barbecue traditions.

Lines stretched outside Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que, a renowned spot located in a gas station straddling the Kansas and Missouri borders. This popular eatery, once favored by the late chef Anthony Bourdain, has experienced a surge in patrons thanks to World Cup visitors.

General Manager Victor Brummel stated, "To be able to be on the world stage here means a lot to the people who are in Kansas City, and they're getting into the soccer spirit just as much." He emphasized the local style, saying, "We don't need to sauce anything up too much. We like to taste the meat, and we like to let it speak for itself."

Despite the local acclaim, Argentine fans remain loyal to their beloved asado. This was clear during a meat-filled gathering at Mill Creek Park, a Kansas City landmark. Fan Alejandro Cuenca remarked, "Nothing compares to a good Argentine barbecue. I wouldn't miss an Argentine barbecue for anything," although he admitted, "But this one is very good."

As the reigning champions gear up to face Algeria, the city is awash in white-and-blue jerseys, and the barbecue debate remains lively. Supporter Cristian Gastes acknowledged, "The Argentine barbecue is my favourite, but this one is really good," while his son Roman added simply, "Amazing."

Argentina will face Algeria on Tuesday night, followed by matches against Austria and tournament newcomers Jordan in Group J.
