Following Conor McGregor's devastating right knee injury during his 69-second TKO loss to Max Holloway at UFC 329, reactions from the MMA community varied widely. While some criticized the 38-year-old McGregor's heart and strategy, Kamaru Usman, the former UFC welterweight champion, offered a compassionate perspective.

Usman, who is preparing for his own return after a 13-month layoff, empathizes with McGregor's struggles. He understands the mental and physical toll injuries can take, having faced his own challenges, including a torn hand ligament, double hernia surgery, and chronic knee issues over the years.

In a statement to CBS Sports, Usman remarked, "I saw a lot of the backlash online... It's a tough thing to do. I could kind of feel Conor's spirit as he was warming up backstage. And then he comes out and that happens. It's about the worst that could've happened. So, I definitely felt for him because it's a dark place to be."

Having experienced a significant career shift after a knockout loss to Leon Edwards in 2022, Usman has gained insight into the difficulties McGregor faces. He stated, "No one, unless you are a fighter of [McGregor's] caliber... it's very, very difficult to truly understand what he's going through."

Despite the challenges ahead, Usman believes that McGregor can ultimately stage a comeback. He said, "At the end of the day, what does a guy like Conor have anymore? It's the glory of being able to be a combatant... That's why it's going to be dark until he's eventually able to build his mind and his body back up to potentially step back in there."

Usman's support highlights the often-overlooked emotional battles athletes face in the wake of injuries.
