The Rugby League World Cup commenced with an exhilarating match between Australia and New Zealand in Sydney, showcasing both skill and unexpected moments. With the score tied at 16-16 in the 60th minute, Kalyn Ponga, a key player for New Zealand, delivered a remarkable try from 45 metres out, maneuvering through defenders to put the Kiwis ahead at 22-16. This impressive feat was made even more memorable as Ponga ran the last 30 metres with his shorts slipping down, revealing bright pink underpants. Unfazed, he celebrated with his teammates before adjusting his shorts.

Despite Ponga's brilliance, the match saw a thrilling turn as Reece Walsh of Australia scored an even more spectacular try at 69 minutes, twisting through defenders to narrow the score to 22-20. Walsh's efforts, however, left him physically drained, resulting in him vomiting after his touchdown. With just four minutes remaining, Jack Bostock completed a debut hat-trick, securing a 24-22 victory for the Kangaroos at Allianz Stadium.

Australia, having won nine of the last ten Rugby League World Cups, remains a strong favorite to claim the title again on home soil. James Fisher-Harris, captain of New Zealand, expressed pride in his team's effort, noting the close contest and their determination.

Looking ahead, New Zealand is expected to advance past Fiji and the Cook Islands, aiming for a semi-final against potential opponents like Samoa, England, or Tonga. England faces a critical match against Tonga, where a loss could jeopardize their chances of advancing.

Walsh reflected on the match's emotional intensity and expressed respect for Ponga's performance, stating the level of competition was exceptional. As the tournament progresses, both teams are poised for exciting challenges ahead.
