Josh Kerr made history at the Diamond League event in London on Saturday, breaking the mile world record with a stunning time of 3:42.66. This achievement saw him surpass the previous record of 3:43.13, set by Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999, by a remarkable 0.47 seconds. Kerr's victory not only earned him a $50,000 (£37,000) prize but also showcased his determination as he aimed to break a record that had stood for 27 years.

Kerr expressed his emotions post-race, stating, "It's very overwhelming. I nearly lost it at the end, but I got over the line."

In contrast, Keely Hodgkinson, the Olympic champion, aimed for her own historic moment in the women's 800m but fell short. Despite winning with a time of 1:56.21, she could not break the 43-year world record set by Jarmila Kratochvilova of Czechoslovakia in 1983. Hodgkinson's performance was hampered by a bizarre training accident where she tripped over a metal grate, injuring her knees.

Looking ahead, Hodgkinson plans to make another attempt at the record during the European Championships in Birmingham next month. She may face stiff competition from Audrey Werro, who has recently recorded the third and fourth fastest 800m times.
