Jose Mourinho unleashed his frustration during a post-match press conference following Real Madrid's 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in La Liga on October 1, 2023. The Real Madrid boss displayed images of two controversial tackles, criticizing the officiating and specifically calling out referee Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias for failing to send off Cristian Romero for a stamp on Jude Bellingham.

Mourinho's nearly five-minute tirade emphasized the impact of the refereeing decisions on the match. He stated, "We could skip the press conference because the story of the match is right here," referring to the images he held up. He pointed out that the match dynamics shifted dramatically after Real Madrid was reduced to 10 men, following the dismissal of Dean Huijsen for a foul on Giuliano Simeone.

Key moments in the match included:

• Alejandro Grimaldo scoring from the penalty spot after Huijsen's red card.
• Jonathan David doubling Atletico's lead shortly after.
• Antonio Rudiger scoring a late header to reduce the deficit.

Mourinho praised his players for their performance in the first half, describing it as "full of class and great character," yet he did not hold back in his criticism of the officiating, questioning the choice of a referee with no international experience for such a high-pressure match.

In the aftermath, Real Madrid released an official statement echoing Mourinho’s sentiments, stating the match was "marked by poor officiating." They highlighted critical moments where decisions could have altered the outcome, particularly the missed red cards for Romero and Kang-In Lee.

As the team now sits six points behind Barcelona, Mourinho noted, "If they just leave us in peace and let us compete on a level playing field with everyone else, we've still got a long way to go," hinting at frustrations beyond just the match.
