Former world and Olympic champion Jonny Brownlee has officially retired at the age of 36. The British athlete leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having won Olympic bronze at the London 2012 Games, silver at Rio 2016, and gold in the mixed relay at Tokyo 2020.

In addition to his Olympic achievements, Brownlee is a six-time world champion and secured mixed team relay gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. His brother, Alistair Brownlee, a double Olympic champion himself, also retired at the age of 36 in 2024.

Reflecting on his decision, Jonny stated, "I've been thinking about it for a while. I've won more than I ever thought I'd ever achieve." He emphasized his commitment to Olympic success but acknowledged that he no longer feels capable of that level of dedication.

The birth of his son, Freddie, ten months ago significantly influenced Brownlee's outlook. He remarked, "He's my priority now, my family, but also with my body as well." This shift in focus has changed his perspective on training and competition, noting that he now prioritizes family over rigorous training schedules.

Brownlee reminisced about his intense racing days, recalling, "I used to dive into corners on my bike at 60kph and not care." However, he now recognizes the risks involved, especially as a father.

He also reflected on the emotional weight of his career, particularly the 2016 World Series Triathlon race in Mexico, where Alistair helped him when he struggled during the run. Despite the frustration of being remembered for that moment, he expressed pride in the bond they shared and the importance of supporting others in their journeys.
