Jonas Vingegaard showcased his exceptional climbing skills at the Giro d’Italia, executing a powerful solo attack to win stage 16 on the ascent to Carì. This victory marks his fourth stage win of the race, solidifying his grip on the leader’s jersey with an impressive lead of over four minutes.

On the day prior to the race, Vingegaard expressed his ambition to win a stage in the pink jersey, and he fulfilled that promise on the 113km route from Bellinzona.

Vingegaard commented on his strategy, stating, "We wanted to try to win in the pink jersey and obviously it can also go wrong. So we chose the first option to do it because if we failed then we would have another one as well."

The Dane launched his decisive attack with less than 7km to go, leaving Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) trailing by over one minute. Gall moved into second overall, while Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), the 2022 Giro winner, finished in third place. Meanwhile, Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain Victorious), who was the longtime race leader, fell to fifth overall, finishing more than three minutes behind Vingegaard.

Despite being the shortest road stage of the race, the route featured two steep climbs and a grueling 11.6km category one ascent, proving challenging for the competitors. An early breakaway dwindled down to four riders, with Jhonatan Narváez being the first to fade.

Vingegaard praised his teammates for their support, stating, "They pulled from the start and didn’t give the breakaway any chances and on the last climb they reduced the bunch and then I had to do the rest."

With stage 17 looming, a 202km journey from Cassano d’Adda to Andalo awaits the riders, raising anticipation for further developments in the race.
