When Ben Johnson took over as head coach for the Chicago Bears two offseasons ago, the focus was on quarterback Caleb Williams, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick. After a challenging rookie season where he took 68 sacks, Johnson aimed to stabilize the offense. One of his first strategic moves was acquiring guard Joe Thuney from the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Trade Details:

• Bears receive: LG Joe Thuney
• Chiefs receive: 2026 fourth-round pick (later used to draft CB Nohl Williams 85th overall in 2025)

Joe Thuney, even at 32, was performing at an elite level, being a first-team All-Pro for the second consecutive year. However, the Chiefs faced financial constraints with high salaries for multiple players, leading to Thuney's departure. The Bears saw an opportunity, as Johnson had prioritized strengthening the offensive line.

Thuney's impact was immediate. The Bears revamped their offensive line:

• 2024: LT Braxton Jones, LG Teven Jenkins, C Coleman Shelton, RG Matt Pryor, RT Darnell Wright
• 2025: LT Theo Benedet or Ozzy Trapilo, LG Joe Thuney, C Drew Dalman, RG Jonah Jackson, RT Darnell Wright

Thuney's presence helped transform the Bears' offensive line, leading to significant improvements in performance. The team went from a dismal 5-12 record to an impressive 11-6, showcasing one of the league's best offenses. Williams saw his sack count drop from 68 to just 24 in the following season.

Chiefs' Success with Nohl Williams

In exchange for Thuney, the Chiefs utilized the acquired pick to draft Nohl Williams, who has emerged as a standout cornerback. His impressive stats include:

• 1st in completion percentage allowed (34.5%)
• 2nd in passer rating allowed (45.6)
• 3rd in yards per attempt allowed (3.6)

With both teams benefiting from the trade, the move stands as a testament to the strategic foresight of both franchises. The Bears found stability in their offensive line, while the Chiefs discovered a potential star in their secondary, ensuring both teams remain competitive in their respective pursuits.
