Joe Root has returned as England's Test captain, stating he does not intend to “completely rip everything up” from the Bazball era. Taking over from Ben Stokes, who stepped down following a series defeat against New Zealand, Root aims to build on the successes of the past four years rather than start anew.

In an interview with ECB, Root emphasized the importance of continuing the positive changes made under Stokes and Brendon McCullum. He stated:

“It’ll be trying to continue some of the good things we have done over that period (since 2022)... The wrong thing to do would be to completely rip everything up that we’ve done over the last four years.”

Root expressed his desire to refine the team's approach, insisting there are areas to improve while maintaining the enjoyable aspects of the game that he has appreciated during this transformative period.

He also shared his excitement about the appointment of Stephen Fleming as the new Test head coach, noting:

“If I’m being brutally honest, he was a big reason why I wanted to do it.”

Despite Fleming not being available for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, with Marcus Trescothick stepping in as interim head coach, Root looks forward to collaborating with Fleming for future challenges, including the winter tour to South Africa.

Reflecting on his previous tenure, Root acknowledged the challenges he faced, admitting:

“Clearly we could’ve been better... but it came to a point where that got a little bit too much for me.”

Now feeling re-energized, Root is eager to lead England and create a competitive team capable of consistently challenging top nations.
