Joe Root has not ruled out the possibility of continuing as England’s Test captain, indicating he is approaching the role on a "game-by-game basis" amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding regular skipper Ben Stokes. Root stepped back into the captaincy for the second Rothesay Test at the Kia Oval after Stokes and Gus Atkinson were sidelined for breaching team protocols during a night out in London.

Previously leading England in a record 64 matches from 2017 to 2022, Root expressed surprise at his return to the role, stating, "I never thought I’d be sat here talking to you guys as England captain again. Zero chance…0.1 per cent." He emphasized that his decision was made with the team's best interests in mind, saying, "It felt like it was the right thing to take this on."

Root's commitment remains short-term, as he noted, "It’s a game-by-game basis, I think. Let’s not look beyond this week." Head coach Brendon McCullum has maintained silence on Stokes’ status, expressing "concern" for the all-rounder during a press conference. Decisions regarding Stokes are pending an investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Root is expected to lead the third Test at Trent Bridge, starting just three days post-Oval, while a seven-week gap before the next series against Pakistan might allow disciplinary processes to unfold.

Conversations between Root and Stokes have been described as "privileged" due to their close friendship. Root acknowledged the challenges of captaincy, stating, "It’s fair to say over my five years as captain there were difficult periods." He deferred questions about Stokes’ well-being to him, affirming the respect Stokes commands within the team despite recent controversies.

The ECB confirmed Stokes is cleared to play for Durham against Northampton from Friday, with Atkinson also available for Surrey’s match against Glamorgan. Durham coach Ryan Campbell noted Stokes is eager to play, stating, "He made a mistake... he’s in good spirits, he’s back in training."
