Jhonatan Narváez claimed his second victory at the 2026 Giro d’Italia by winning stage eight on Saturday, marking a significant moment for the injury-stricken UAE Team Emirates XRG. This victory comes after a challenging start to the race, with team members Adam Yates, Jay Vine, and Marc Soler all forced out due to a severe crash during stage three in Bulgaria.

The stage, covering 156 kilometers and starting from Chieti on the Adriatic, favored breakaway riders. Narváez, who had previously won stage four in a sprint, joined a breakaway midway through the race. He successfully created a 32-second gap at the finish line, outpacing Andreas Leknessund from Uno-X Mobility, who took second place, while fellow UAE rider Mikkel Bjerg secured third.

In the overall standings, Afonso Eulálio, who led after stage five, continues to maintain his position ahead of Jonas Vingegaard and Felix Gall. Vingegaard, a race favorite, began his title challenge on Friday with a strong performance on the Blockhaus climb, finishing 13 seconds ahead of Gall.

As the race moves to stage nine, which also starts on the Adriatic and features a steep climb in the final three kilometers, Eulálio will face pressure from the top competitors. Following Monday's rest day, a critical 42km individual time trial is scheduled for Tuesday. So far, 15 riders have withdrawn from the race, a stark contrast to last year's 25 who did not reach Rome.
