Olympic medallist Jenny Simpson has been released from the hospital following a cardiac arrest she suffered while running at a Sir Walter Miler pop-up event in Raleigh, North Carolina last week.

The 39-year-old American collapsed while pacing a mile group during the event. According to a statement from her employer, Fleet Feet, Simpson received immediate lifesaving care, including CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

She was initially transported to UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh before being transferred to Duke University Hospital, where she has since been discharged.

Highlights of her situation include:

• World Champion in the 1500m (2011)
• Bronze medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics
• Recently retired from competitive running at the end of the 2024 season
• Became Fleet Feet's first chief running officer earlier this year

In the statement, Simpson expressed her deep gratitude to the first responders and the medical teams at both hospitals for their skill and compassion during her care. She also thanked everyone for their messages, prayers, and acts of kindness from friends, colleagues, competitors, and runners worldwide.

Looking ahead, she anticipates reconnecting with the community as she continues her recovery in North Carolina with her husband.
