The letter, delivered by Daniels' attorney on August 5, states that LSU is no longer authorized to use Daniels' name, image, and likeness (NIL), referencing a prior agreement that allowed usage for 180 days post his final college game.

The Daniels family expressed deep disappointment, emphasizing their belief that No. 5 would remain a significant part of Jayden's legacy following his historic Heisman Trophy win in 2023. A spokesperson stated, "Jayden and his family had every reason to believe that his number would remain a meaningful part of his LSU legacy and would be honored and protected."

Since Daniels' departure for the NFL, No. 5 had not been worn by any player, although it has not been officially retired. Pickett, who wore No. 3 last season and earned freshman All-American honors, was promised the number during his recruitment by former coach Brian Kelly. Current LSU coach Lane Kiffin supported Pickett's claim, arguing that commitments made during recruitment should be honored.

Despite Daniels' popularity among fans, the cease-and-desist letter has sparked criticism, with some viewing it as overly aggressive.
