This letter, reported by ESPN, informed LSU that it can no longer use Daniels' name, image, and likeness, following the assignment of jersey No. 5 to sophomore defensive back DJ Pickett—a number Daniels also wore during his time at LSU.

Daniels appears to be a victim of questionable advice, possibly influenced by his mother, Regina Jackson, who manages his business affairs. In an Instagram statement, Daniels expressed his embarrassment over the situation, emphasizing his focus on NFL training and gratitude for his time at LSU. He stated, "There are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU, and my hope is that it will get done privately."

This incident reflects broader issues regarding players’ relationships with their former schools in the NIL era. Daniels, who played three years at Arizona State, had a strictly business relationship with LSU, highlighted by his individual accomplishments rather than team success.

The conflict over jersey numbers is not new; Brian Kelly, LSU's head coach, noted he withheld No. 5 from Pickett until Daniels approved it, citing the precedent of Joe Burrow's No. 9 jersey, which remains unused since Burrow's Heisman-winning season in 2019. Kelly stated, "We didn't want to issue [Burrow's] No. 9, so you can't treat one differently from the other."

Pickett, who believes he was promised No. 5 during recruitment, defended his claim, stating, "It was the number I was promised. I wish Jayden the best. Good player and he did real good here."
