IndyCar drivers are expressing their excitement as they prepare for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., a race set against the iconic backdrop of the U.S. Capitol. Kyle Kirkwood highlighted the significance of the setting, stating, "This one is by far the best that we've ever had... it's stuff that you dream of."

This race marks the second major sporting event organized by President Donald Trump to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday, following a UFC fight earlier in June. Although IndyCar doesn't share the same political associations as some other sports, series owner Roger Penske has connections to the administration, having received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump in 2019.

Drivers are thrilled about the increased media attention surrounding the event. Kirkwood remarked, "It’s cool to see IndyCar in this light... to have an event that is sought after as much as the Indy 500 is something that’s special."

Washington's history with motorsports is limited, with the last notable event in 2002 at RFK Stadium. The Freedom 250 is set in a prime tourist area, promising a spectacular atmosphere if weather permits. Rinus VeeKay, a driver with six top-10 finishes this season, shared his awe:

The race track will navigate key landmarks, including a stretch along Pennsylvania Avenue and turns near the National Archives. Josef Newgarden expressed hope that the event would increase visibility for IndyCar racing, which is often overshadowed.

Scheduled events include practice and qualifying on Saturday, followed by the main race on Sunday, covering 250 miles (147 laps). The track is shorter than others in the series but presents unique challenges, as noted by Marcus Armstrong, who mentioned the potential for slippery conditions due to crosswalks and paint on the track.
