Pierre Gasly of Alpine stunned the crowd by clinching pole position at the Italian Grand Prix, edging out George Russell from Mercedes by just 0.060 seconds. This remarkable performance marks Gasly's first pole since his victory at this very race in 2020.

Oscar Piastri from McLaren initially qualified third but received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Liam Lawson during qualifying. As a result, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who qualified fourth and fifth, will move up the grid. Max Verstappen from Red Bull also benefits from Piastri’s penalty.

Gasly's achievement comes on the heels of losing his Monaco Grand Prix podium due to a reinstated penalty. He becomes the first Frenchman to take pole at a grand prix since Jean Alesi in 1997.

Russell, who had hoped to capitalize on Kimi Antonelli’s 30-place grid penalty, expressed disappointment at finishing second. He noted that his final lap was compromised by being too close to Verstappen.

Gasly remarked on his performance:

It was amazing... I felt very good in the car, trying to chip away a bit every single session.

Lando Norris, another McLaren driver, struggled to find pace and ended up ninth after a messy session, largely due to Piastri’s earlier mistake that disrupted his final run.

In contrast, Ferrari had hoped to challenge for pole with a new engine that reportedly adds 0.1 seconds per lap. However, both Leclerc and Hamilton fell short, with Hamilton just 0.001 seconds ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto in the final qualifying session. The session concluded with a sense of unpredictability and excitement as Gasly's unexpected pole reshaped the grid for the race.
