Kimi Antonelli is poised to assist his Mercedes teammate George Russell during qualifying at the Italian Grand Prix. Russell faces a challenging situation, starting at the back of the grid due to an engine penalty stemming from exceeding power-unit component limits earlier this season. Antonelli, racing at his home track in Monza, recognizes the potential impact on his championship lead, which could diminish this weekend.

Both Russell and Lewis Hamilton from Ferrari trail Antonelli by 59 points, while Lando Norris of McLaren, recent winner of two races, sits 83 points behind.

Antonelli has expressed his willingness to provide slipstream assistance to Russell during qualifying, which could enhance Russell's chances for pole position. He stated, "It has been discussed with the team... if the team will ask me to do so, I will do it."

Russell praised Antonelli's readiness to help, highlighting the strong teamwork culture at Mercedes. He noted, "I think it just goes to show the level of teamwork we have at the moment... Last week it worked well, and if the roles were reversed, the same would have happened."

Despite the challenges, Russell remains focused on his performance, emphasizing the importance of self-improvement regardless of his teammate's support. He acknowledged the increased competition from McLaren and Ferrari, stating, "The momentum is with McLaren right now... I think it can be between any of the top four teams - but I hope it's us."
