Thirteen years after hosting Real Madrid in a friendly, Bournemouth prepares for its European debut against Real Sociedad on Thursday. This landmark moment reflects the club's incredible journey from near extinction to competing on the continental stage.

In that fateful summer match, Cristiano Ronaldo and his galácticos trounced Bournemouth 6-0, but the experience left an indelible mark on club legend Steve Fletcher. He reminisces about the surreal nature of that day, highlighting how far the club has come since then.

Bournemouth's qualification for the Europa League was celebrated with fans gathering around a flag featuring their Brazilian forward, signaling a new chapter. Under the guidance of coach Andoni Iraola, who has sent messages of support for the upcoming match, the team aims to make history.

Fletcher emphasizes the emotional weight of this moment for every supporter, stating, "It is for every supporter who has ever followed Bournemouth: past, present, for the people who passed away..."

Owner Bill Foley's ambitious vision has played a crucial role, predicting European competition within five years. Fletcher recalls the club's struggles, including a perilous -17 points at the start of a season, and his pivotal role in keeping the club afloat.

With an upgraded stadium ready for UEFA regulations, Bournemouth looks forward to facing teams like Sturm Graz and AC Milan in the coming months. Captain Adam Smith reflects on the improbability of this journey, while others in the squad, like David Brooks, express excitement about competing in Europe.

This debut is not just a game; it's a celebration of resilience, history, and the dreams of fans who have witnessed the club's evolution. Fletcher concludes, "For us to be mixing it with some of the giants of European football is magical." The club's aspirations continue, with hopes of facing giants like Real Madrid in the future.
