Jamie Carragher has raised concerns about Emiliano Martinez's current performance level following Chelsea's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa for just £7.5m this summer, has quickly become Xabi Alonso’s first choice, replacing Robert Sanchez.

In his analysis on Sky Sports, Carragher pointed out that Kai Havertz’s equaliser highlighted a perceived decline in Martinez’s sharpness. He stated,

‘I think the goalkeeper saves that two or three years ago.’
Carragher emphasized that while the signing of Martinez was a smart move, it doesn't bring the same impact as the goalkeeper who won the World Cup. He noted,
‘It isn’t a mistake, it was a great deal for £7.5m and he’s still a really good goalkeeper and he’s better than Sanchez.’

Despite this criticism, Martinez made crucial saves later in the match, stopping efforts from Bukayo Saka and Ezri Konsa to keep Chelsea in the game.

While Carragher's assessment is valid, it's worth noting that Chelsea did not expect the 2022 World Cup version of Martinez. The signing was aimed at bringing experience and stability to a position that had lacked reliability.

Although Martinez’s reaction for Havertz’s goal could have been quicker, his later saves demonstrate his ability. However, at 34, he may serve as a short-term stabilizer rather than a long-term elite solution for Chelsea, who face a growing gap to Arsenal, showcasing a need for more maturity and control in crucial matches.
