Islam Makhachev retained the UFC welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry on Saturday, marking a historic milestone in his career. The victory at UFC 330 not only secured his title but also established Makhachev's record-breaking 17th consecutive win in the promotion, surpassing the legendary Anderson Silva.

Throughout the match, Makhachev, renowned as the UFC’s pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter, showcased his wrestling prowess. In the first two rounds, he managed to minimize striking exchanges with Machado Garry, even executing a surprising head kick that dropped the Irish star in round two.

Despite this setback, Machado Garry, 28, rebounded effectively in round three by successfully defending against Makhachev's takedown attempts and displaying varied striking. However, Makhachev, aged 34, regained control by securing another takedown, despite showing signs of exhaustion. The judges scored the bout 49-46, 49-46, 48-47 in favor of Makhachev, affirming his successful first defense at welterweight after four record-breaking defenses at lightweight.

Post-fight, Makhachev acknowledged Machado Garry's skills, stating, "Ian is a great fighter, he gave me a hard time, but I prove [myself] every fight." He reflected on the challenges of competing in the 170lb division, expressing confidence in his grappling game.

Machado Garry, displaying sportsmanship, said, "I believed in my heart and in my soul I was better than him tonight; he won, I have no complaints, no excuses." He emphasized his determination to return stronger, declaring, "To all the fans that doubt me, I’ll be back."

In the co-main event, Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her women’s strawweight title against Gillian Robertson, adding to the excitement of the night.
