Lando Norris secured pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix in a thrilling qualifying session held in Budapest. The McLaren driver edged out Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari by a mere 12 thousandths of a second in a dramatic finale.

Initially, Hamilton seemed poised to capture his first pole since the 2023 Hungarian GP, leading Norris by a tenth after the first runs in Q3. However, as competitors struggled during their second runs, Norris found the needed improvement to clinch the pole.

The qualifying results included:

• Lando Norris (McLaren) - 1st
• Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) - 2nd
• Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) - 3rd
• Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) - 4th
• Oscar Piastri (McLaren) - 5th
• Max Verstappen (Red Bull) - 6th, after spinning out on his final lap.

Mercedes' Antonelli, who leads Hamilton by 45 points in the Drivers' Championship, faced challenges as the team's streak of 10 consecutive poles came to an end. George Russell struggled again, finishing 7th and experiencing a breakdown on track during his in-lap.

Post-session investigations loom for both Hamilton and Antonelli, as Hamilton may have impeded Piastri and Antonelli possibly failed to slow adequately for yellow flags due to Verstappen's spin.

Norris expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, "A tough qualifying... We seemed quick from the first laps we did and we brought a few upgrades. Very happy to be back on top, especially at a track where you certainly want to be on pole."

Arvid Lindblad finished 9th for Racing Bulls, and Nico Hulkenberg took the 10th spot for Audi. Notably, Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin showed promise by reaching Q2 for the first time this season, although he will start from 16th.
