Iyiola Adebayo, a former academy prospect at West Ham United, reflects on his challenging journey after being released from the club at 16. Once a promising player, Adebayo faced setbacks due to injuries and struggled to cope with rejection during trials. He recounts the mental toll of having to travel alone to various locations, unable to showcase his full potential.

Desperate for stability, Adebayo turned to part-time work as a pizza delivery driver. It was then that he learned about the Premier League Futures programme, designed to support released players through a three-year aftercare commitment. Initially reluctant to join, Adebayo eventually embraced the opportunity, which has since proven transformative.

The Futures programme, initiated in 2017, focuses on career pathways beyond football for players aged 18-24. Adebayo is now in his final year of a sponsored degree in football business and marketing at the University Campus of Football Business. He also conducts workshops on mental health and lifestyle choices for academy players, drawing from his own experiences.

Adebayo emphasizes the importance of addressing the pressures academy players face, stating, "Sometimes it’s about the messenger as well as the message. I’m not that far removed from the experiences they’re going through."

The programme has broadened Adebayo's perspective on career opportunities within football. He acknowledges his previous limited view, now realizing there are countless fulfilling roles beyond playing, coaching, or physiotherapy.

Neil Saunders, the Premier League’s director of football, supports this initiative, highlighting the need for young players to find success outside of professional playing careers. Adebayo now plans to pursue a career in player care and potentially move into the business side of sports, feeling optimistic about his future in football.
