What had been billed as a Battle of Britain instead became another emphatic demonstration of Australia's dominance in the Commonwealth Games pool.

In the men's 200m freestyle final at Tollcross Swimming Centre, Olympic relay gold medallists James Guy, Matt Richards, and Tom Dean represented hopes for a British victory. However, it was Australia's Kai Taylor who stole the spotlight.

Taylor, drawn in the outside lane, launched his race with a fearless pace that left his rivals struggling to keep up. Despite a fierce push from Guy and Richards in the final 25 metres, Taylor secured a surprising Commonwealth title.

Behind him, Guy and Richards shared silver after finishing with identical times, while McMillan and Dean fell out of medal contention. Notably, Duncan Scott, another pre-race favourite, failed to make the final after an unexpected exit in the heats.

Guy reflected on the race, acknowledging Taylor's superior tactics:

Fair play, he got his hand on the wall first. When you're in the outside lane, that's probably the only way you can do it.

Richards, who made Welsh history by winning four medals at a single Games, expressed mixed feelings:

I wanted a gold there but Kai was the better man tonight.

Despite the underwhelming result for the home crowd, Australia continued to dominate with 29 wins throughout the week, raising their medal tally to 36. Amidst this, Angharad Evans emerged as a new star, completing a breaststroke double by winning both the 200m and 100m titles, along with a silver in the 4x100m mixed medley relay. "I didn't go into this meet expecting any sort of medal," she said, reflecting on her unexpected success.
