Basketball Without Borders (BWB), the NBA and FIBA's global development program, marked its 25th anniversary this year. This initiative has become a vital platform for emerging basketball talent, showcasing players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Joel Embiid, Pascal Siakam, and Jamal Murray.

In a recent interview, Jalen Suggs, a Magic guard, expressed his excitement about coaching young players during the inaugural men's "Next Up" camp in Istanbul, Türkiye. Suggs emphasized the value of sharing knowledge and gaining new perspectives as he transitioned from player to mentor.

Highlights from the camp included:

• Athletic testing and skill development sessions led by NBA players like Khris Middleton.
• An innovative format for BWB featuring two annual camps for the top 80 male and female prospects globally.
• The upcoming women's Next Up camp set for this fall.

Brendan McKillop, NBA Director of Elite Basketball, noted the shift in BWB’s format was crucial to adapt to the evolving landscape of global basketball talent. The program has seen nearly 5,000 players from 149 countries participate, with 155 former campers reaching the NBA or WNBA.

The initiative not only identifies talent but also offers opportunities for players from less represented regions, enabling them to compete at higher levels. Middleton highlighted the importance of mentorship, stating that sharing experiences helps young athletes overcome nerves and enjoy the game.

The increase in international players in the NBA reflects BWB's success, with a record 135 foreign players on last season's opening night rosters. The NBA's international reach continues to grow, with plans for the NBA Europe League in 2027 and ongoing development of the Basketball Africa League.
