Bowler Alex Marshall is set to carry the Saltire at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career. With seven medals to his name, including five golds, this moment adds to his rich legacy in the Commonwealth Games.

Marshall's favorite memory remains his iconic celebration during the 2014 pairs semi-final against England. However, the honor of being the opening flagbearer eluded him until now, as he previously led the team during the closing ceremony in 2014. This time, he shares the honor with judoka Sarah Adlington, who is also eager to represent Team Scotland at The Hydro.

Reflecting on the moment, the 59-year-old Marshall expressed his emotions, stating, "It's a bit nerve-wracking really... I certainly had a tear in my eye when I came out the lift this morning and all the athletes were there. It's just a huge honour."

Dressed in full kilt, Marshall joyfully discussed the news, acknowledging the need to temporarily part with the flagstick before the ceremony. Meanwhile, Adlington, who has secured judo gold in both 2014 and 2022, is looking to complete her career with a third gold.

Excited yet nervous, she revealed, "I was told I could tell my nearest and dearest but for everyone else it will be a massive surprise. I'm just so excited... if it's even half as good as it was in 2014, it will be amazing."

As the opening ceremony approaches, both athletes prepare to lead Scotland with pride and passion.
