Jonas Vingegaard, the pre-race favorite, showcased his Giro d’Italia potential by triumphing at the Blockhaus summit finish during stage seven on Friday. This victory marks Vingegaard's first significant move in this year’s race, establishing him as a key contender.

The rider from Visma-Lease a Bike made a decisive break with just over 5km remaining, with Felix Gall from Decathlon CMA CGM being the only competitor to closely follow, finishing just 13 seconds behind the victor.

Jai Hindley, the Australian who won at Blockhaus in 2022, secured third place, while the overall leader, Afonso Eulálio of Bahrain Victorious, faced challenges but managed to retain the pink jersey, finishing less than three minutes after Vingegaard.

Vingegaard expressed his satisfaction post-race, stating, "Today we just wanted to go for the win and I’m extremely happy that I could finish it off. My teammates they did an amazing job today and I’m happy that I can really pay it off." He acknowledged the tough conditions, describing the climb as “very tough” due to headwinds.

The stage, which lasted over six hours, was the longest of the Giro at 245km (152 miles), taking the peloton from the coastal city of Formia into the challenging Apennine mountains. Eulálio, who took the pink jersey on Wednesday, struggled during the climb and lost contact with the leaders, finishing nearly three minutes behind Vingegaard. His lead in the overall standings is now reduced to 3min 17sec, with Gall trailing by another 17 seconds.
