Jonas Vingegaard seized the Giro d’Italia leader’s pink jersey for the first time after a stunning solo victory in stage 14. The Visma-Lease a Bike rider completed a hat-trick of stage wins, showcasing his strength in the Alps.

Vingegaard, who had already triumphed on summit finishes in stages seven and nine, launched his decisive attack with less than 5km remaining in the challenging 133km ride from Aosta to Pila. He now aims to become the eighth rider to win all three Grand Tours in his first attempt.

The team’s strategy paid off as Vingegaard’s teammates executed a strong plan, controlling the race effectively. Vingegaard expressed his pride, stating, "Today we made a plan from the start with the team, and we wanted to control the race. It was really impressive how they rode."

Afonso Eulálio from Bahrain Victorious, who had held the pink jersey since stage five, struggled on the final climb, finishing nearly three minutes behind Vingegaard and dropping to second place, now 2min 26sec off the leader.

The race began with a significant breakaway group forming early on. Tim Rex from Visma played a crucial role, maintaining pace despite the grueling climbs. As the race progressed, the reduced peloton reeled in the leaders, with Eulálio unable to hold his position.

Looking ahead, stage 15 will take the riders 157 km from Voghera to Milan.
