Fredrik Dversnes clinched a memorable victory in the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday, triumphing from a breakaway amidst complications that saw the final lap in Milan neutralised due to rider complaints about safety conditions.

Dversnes, representing Uno-X Mobility, crossed the finish line ahead of three Italian competitors: Mirco Maestri, Martin Marcellusi, and Mattia Bais. The highly anticipated bunch sprint did not occur as expected.

In the overall standings, Jonas Vingegaard maintained his lead in the pink jersey, sitting two minutes and 26 seconds ahead of Afonso Eulálio after a flat 157-kilometre stage from Voghera to Milan. The stage was initially perceived as ideal for sprinters, but the situation escalated when Vingegaard and other riders raised concerns about road furniture, leading race organisers to neutralise the last five kilometres for the general classification. This ruling was later extended to the entire final lap, although the stage and Dversnes' victory remained valid.

Vingegaard expressed gratitude towards the race organisers for their responsiveness, stating, "We all thought that the circuit was dangerous... I think I had a bit of responsibility on my shoulders."

For Dversnes, this marked the biggest win of his career, having last won during the fourth stage of the Arctic Race of Norway in August. He reflected, "I knew I had good opportunities because I’m pretty good at going in breaks, so this was my big shot."

The riders will have a rest day on Monday before entering a demanding final week, starting with a challenging mountain stage on Tuesday that will take them from Bellinzona to Cari, covering 113km of tough terrain.
